EPA recognizes River Falls for Leading Green Power Purchases

We are pleased to announce that, for the first time, River Falls appears on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) national list of Green Power Communities. River Falls is the first community in Wisconsin and the Midwest to receive this distinction, ranking No. 10 on the EPA’s list of Green Power Communities.

Green Power Communities are cities, towns and villages in which local government, businesses and residents collectively buy green power in amounts that meet or exceed the EPA’s purchase requirements as part of the Green Power Partnership. The EPA recently updated its National Top Partner lists highlighting some of America's largest green power purchasers. Through power supplier, WPPI Energy, our community is purchasing more than 18 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, enough green power to meet 15 percent of the community’s purchased electricity use.

This involvement is credited to many individuals and groups with making River Falls a national leader in the use of renewable energy. Residents, businesses, local government, and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UWRF) community have all played an important role in supporting clean energy alternatives. Participation received a significant boost when students at UWRF voted in favor of allocating student funds to power the school’s University Center and residence halls with renewable energy. A purchase by the state provides additional renewable energy to the campus. In addition, POWERful Choices! initiatives to promote energy efficiency, energy conservation and renewable energy on a community-wide basis has resulted in additional customer participation. The community’s participation rate also increased, in large part, thanks to an impressive response by local citizens to a challenge from Mayor Don Richards encouraging residents to increase their support of renewable energy by purchasing blocks provided by renewable sources. Together, there is a shared responsibility for the long-term economic and environmental health of our community, by making smart resource decisions for a better energy future.

River Falls Municipal Utilities offers Green-e Energy certified renewable energy through its renewable energy programs, which include Green Power for Business and a companion program for residential customers. The utility’s programs make investing in renewable energy easy and affordable for all community members.
