University kiosk dedicated as local momentum for conservation grows
Community members and university students recently got their first look at a conservation-themed information kiosk located in the University of Wisconsin – River Falls (UWRF) University Center building. The kiosk, unveiled at an Earth Week celebration on April 20, highlights sustainable features of the recently completed University Center as well as environmental impacts of conservation efforts at the University. River Falls Municipal Utilities (RFMU) and power supplier Wisconsin Public Power Inc. (WPPI) jointly provided $20,000 for construction of the kiosk, which also features renewable energy and energy conservation information from the utility companies. The unveiling was the most recent in a number of developments that have contributed to building momentum for energy conservation efforts in River Falls. Last fall, UWRF students voted in favor of allocating a portion of student fees to fund the cost of powering the University Center with renewable energy purchased from RFMU. In March, the University, RFMU and WPPI recently signed a memorandum of understanding outlining their intentions to develop mutually beneficial renewable energy and energy conservation programs, projects and educational activities within the community and on campus. And, in April, the River Falls City Council passed a resolution implementing “Lead by Example,” a community-wide initiative to promote energy efficiency, conservation, and renewable energy resource development efforts. “Because River Falls Municipal Utilities is community-owned, we were pleased to support the local University’s energy conservation efforts,” said RFMU General Manger Carl Gaulke. “We’re committed to acting as a community resource on energy efficiency and conservation.” |
