Natural Resources

Protecting Our Natural Resources

The City of River Falls is committed to conserving and enhancing the natural resources that define our community — from our rivers and forests to native prairies and wildlife. Stewardship of these resources not only protects our environment but improves the health, safety, and quality of life for residents.

Mission

To preserve and sustainably manage River Falls’ natural resources for current and future generations.

Why do Natural Resources Matter?

  • Healthy natural areas help protect water quality by filtering pollutants and reducing runoff.
  • Native plants support pollinators, birds, and other wildlife critical to a healthy ecosystem.
  • Access to nature improves mental and physical well-being, reduces stress, and encourages outdoor recreation.
  • Trees, wetlands, and soil naturally store carbon and help buffer the effects of climate changes.
  • Community greenspaces increase property values and promote civic pride.

Natural Area Restoration:
River Falls works with partners to actively restore and manage prairies, woodlands, and wetlands throughout the city, improving habitat, biodiversity, and ecological function.

Invasive Species Management:
The City works to control invasive plants like buckthorn and wild parsnip that threaten native species and reduce habitat quality.

Pollinator & Native Planting Projects:
Prairie and garden plantings featuring native species support bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.

Watershed Protection & Stormwater Management:
Green infrastructure like stormwater ponds, rain gardens, buffer strips, and bioswales help keep our rivers clean and reduce flooding. For more information on the City's stormwater programs read more here.

Urban Forestry:
Our Urban Forestry Program manages over 8,000 public trees across streets, parks, and boulevards. Through intentional planning and management, we maintain a healthy and diverse urban forest that provides benefits across the City.

Sustainability & Resilience:
Efforts like tree planting, urban forest management, and carbon reduction strategies help mitigate climate change and promote long-term environmental resilience.
