Election Administration

The City Clerk administers all aspects of the electoral and voting process in the City of River Falls, and is charged with ensuring the electoral process is fair, accurate, impartial, and conducted in accordance with the laws of the State of Wisconsin.

A reminder to all our residents: The City Clerk’s Office does not mail voter registration or absentee voting applications unless requested. You may receive various mailings from groups mass mailing applications. Many times the applications are not current or do not contain all the necessary requirements.

Voting Absentee - Qualifications

Any qualified elector who is unable or unwilling to appear at the polling place on Election Day may request to vote an absentee ballot. A qualified elector is any U.S citizen who will be 18 years of age or older on Election Day and who has resided in the City of River Falls for at least 28 days before the election. The elector must be registered with the City of River Falls to receive an absentee ballot and provide an acceptable form of Photo ID.

Obtaining an Absentee Ballot

In order to obtain an absentee ballot, you must make a request in writing by following one of the methods listed below.

You may apply for an absentee ballot through My Vote Wisconsin by using the following link: https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/VoteAbsentee.

Deadline for Returning Absentee Ballots

Ballots that have been mailed to voters include a postage paid return envelope. Ballots must be returned to the Central Count at City Hall, lower level, training room, by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Any ballots received after 8 p.m. on Election Day will not be counted.

Ways to Return Your Absentee Ballot

Ways Voters can return their absentee ballots include:

  • In Person - absentee ballots will be accepted at City Hall during normal business hours. You can personally hand your ballot to City staff. Your ballot will be kept in a secured location until it is counted on election day. 
  • By mail - you can also return your ballot by mail. To ensure your ballot will be counted on election day, you need to mail it as soon as possible after it is received. At a minimum, please mail your ballot at least 7-10 days in advance of the election. Remember if your ballot is not received by 8 p.m. on Election Day, it will not be counted.

Please note: the City of River Falls processes all absentee ballots received at a Central Count Location. Absentee ballots are NOT accepted at polling locations.

Central Count

The Municipal Board of Absentee Ballot Canvassers will meet at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, in the Training Room, City of River Falls, 222 Lewis Street, River Falls, WI. 

The purpose of the meeting is to tally all absentee ballots issued for the current Election. The meeting is open to the public.

Notice of Absentee Voting with Special Voting Deputies

As per State Statute 6.875(4)(6), this information serves as notice that Special Deputies will be administrating absentee voting for the residents of Well Haven, Kinni Health & Rehab, The Sycamore and Comforts of Home on various dates.

Election held on the first Tuesday in April to elect judicial, educational, and municipal officers, and non-partisan county officers, and to express preferences for the person to be the presidential candidate for each party in presidential election years.

Partisan Primary

Primary held in even-numbered years on the second Tuesday in August, to nominate candidates to be voted for at the General Election, and to determine which candidates for state offices other than district attorney may participate in the Wisconsin election campaign fund.
